Your Child Was Just Born with a Facial Difference
You are as unique as your newborn child is, and your reaction to his or her facial difference will be as individual as you are.
A wide range of very normal emotions emerge in parents of children born with facial differences including feelings of shock, disappointment, protectiveness, fear, worry, sadness, and depression. These feelings can be quite strong though each of you may experience them differently.
In addition, parents often cycle through a number of these feelings, which can sometimes be distressing because we don’t understand what is happening to us. The important thing to remember is that these feelings are within the normal expanse of human emotion.
Adjusting to this new, and perhaps unexpected, situation will take time, perseverance, and support from family, friends, and the professionals you choose to care for your child.
In addition, many families choose to join a support network such as the Family-to-Family Connection or Pathfinders because these networks provide an opportunity to share experiences.
